SESSION 41: 8TH NIGHT, 8/11/96 (New York)
Tonight was going to be our night of the butterfly, a new port. For our invocation [Scribe] chose Blake’s prologue to Milton.
The Grotto
Alone Upon the Waters
10:38 PM
1. Q: [Guide], are you there?
A: I AM HERE ALONE UPON [THE] WATERS
No one else: neither contacts nor teachers (although I am
[Guide]’s contact).
2. Q: Where do we go?
A: I AM HERE TO LEAD YOU TO MY PORT
3. Q: Will you give us instructions for travel?
A: I MAY [NO]T –
YOU LACK [THE] ABILITY TO IMAGINE A DETAIL AND SO
MAKE [THE] ALEPH ARISE HERE ON [THE] LAKE
I SIMPLY POINT YOU TOWARD [THE] FEATURES I WISH
TO SPEAK OF
Slightly confusing. No surprise, however, that we still lack
the ability.
4. Q: Given these restraints, what can we do?
A: GO TO [THE] PICTURE ON [THE] MANDALA
Rather than turn over the ouija board, we had a handy 67%
size Xerox.
5. Q: We have it before us.
A: WHAT FEATURE STANDS FOR ME?
[Our Guide] on Himself
6. Q: The flower petals – or butterfly wings.
A: YOU SAW ACUTELY FOR [THE]RE IS A JUSTNESS TO THIS IMAGE
I WILL READ IT FOR YOU BOTH
Recall, I conceived of flower petals when drawing; my higher
Albion, however, using a Vilansit-like voice, mentioned butterfly wings.
7. Q: Please begin.
A: FIRST [THE] PETALS OR WINGS ARE MANY
I AM NEITHER HERE NOR THERE IN [THE] SAME WAY THAT
A HUMAN SOUL IS
MY KITE REACHES NOT JUST THROUGH SPACE BUT KINDS
OF SPACE
I ALONE IN [THE] CIRCLE CAN DO THIS
8. Q: Fire fishes are linear. You are not linear.
A: I AM WHOLLY PRESENT TO MY OWN KARASS EVEN AS
I VISIT YOURS
I AM MANY-MINDED
9. Q: But you have limits or a range – as a sphere has a radius.
A: NOT A SPATIAL LIMIT BUT A RADIUS OF KNOWLEDGE AND
SYMPATHY
I DO SOME THINGS BETTER THAN I DO OTHERS
Somehow, I deeply believe, even God is bounded by His own
imagination. Everyone has limits.
10. Q: What is difficult for you?
A: HUMANS ARE DIFFICULT
LANGUAGE IS DIFFICULT
11. Q: If we were an easy subject, you would not learn from us.
A: I LIKE A CHALLENGE AS YOU SAID
We did not recall the reference, but it did sound like us.
What is a Daimon?
12. Q: Are you a daimon? Are you an angel? Or something else?
A: DAIMON IS [THE] BEST NAME I THINK
HERE ARE MY REASONS
13. OF OLD A DAIMON LINKED EARTH & [THE] HEAVENLY SPHERE
MEN KNEW EARTH ALONE
ANGELS KNEW HEAVEN ALONE
14. Q: Whereas a daimon can travel between?
A: WE SAY TRAVEL BUT EXTEND MAY BE APTER
An interesting amoeba-like picture, and yet lacking any parallel in
our known universe. Because [Guide] is “many-minded,” he need not
disconnect his attention from other places where he exists; he need not
ever be absent. Yet even an amoeba, when extending its cytoplasm in
one direction, must give up itself in the other. [Guide] in a literal sense
defies the law of conservation of matter & energy.
15. Q: Give us another reason.
A: EACH PETAL OR WING HAS AN EYE IN YOUR PICTURE
On each petal is a kind of arabesque droplet, which I initially
conceived as a drop of dew, but which was quickly stylized.
16. Q: Meaning?
A: OTHER EYES TURN TOWARD [THE] SUN ALONE BUT MY EYES
LOOK IN MANY DIRECTION[s]
I AM ATTEMPTING TO LOOK AWAY FROM [THE] SUN
TOWARD YOUR KARASS
17. Q: Is this why we are difficult?
A: OBJECTS IN SHADE ARE MORE DIFFICULT TO SEE
18. Q: Is there another reason why you think of yourself as a daimon?
A: IT WAS SAID TO BE A SPECIES BUT FOR ME IT IS A ROLE
A DAIMON INSTRUCTS & EXALTS
I MAY DO [THE] SAME
That [Guide] disavows a literal, organic identity with daimones –
after saying he is one – might be one of those subtle, yet profound comments
so quietly, yet so liberally spangled throughout our ouija sessions. One
reading of this is that all of physical reality is but a role play. “I’m not
really a human, but I play one on T.V.”
Two Schools in Heaven
19. Q: Please go on.
A: TWO SCHOOLS IN HEAVEN –
ONE BELIEVING IN DAIMONES OR ENVOYS
[THE] OTHER NOT
20. Q: Shouldn’t heaven know for sure?
A: WE HAVE LIMITS AS YOU SAID
SOME ENVOYS HAVE FALLEN & WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT
IS BEST IN ALL THINGS /
AT EVERY LEVEL THERE IS RISK
Belief not in the existence of daimones, but in their role. The last
line here, concerning risk, is obvious, yet nevertheless deeply profound.
11:54 PM
21. Q: Please go on.
A: ANY TRAVELLER WILLING TO DO SO MIGHT ACT AS A GUIDE
[Our Guide]’s Role
22. Q: What role do you play in our mandala?
A: I CERTAINLY CANNOT TEACH AS OTHERS DO
BUT I REACH BY MEANS OF ALIAH INTO PLACES THAT ARE
DIFFICULT TO GET TO OTHERWISE
23. Q: Places in the forest, for example?
A: [YES] BUT ALSO PLACES IN YOUR KITE
HENCE OUR EARLY BOARD SPEECH
It has been long acknowledged that my close connection to [Guide] –
he is my “working partner” – enabled our early speech.
24. Q: Why do we need someone from outside our karass to be in the mandala?
A: IT WAS AGREED THAT DAIMONES IN [THE] NET WOULD NOT
TEACH THEIR FELLOW MEMBERS
WERE I IN YOUR KARASS I WOULD NOT BE SPEAKING NOW –
I KNOW THIS APPEARS ARBITRARY BUT IT IS BASED ON DEEP
STUDY
25. Q: Can you elaborate?
A: A FANCIFUL IMAGE?
WHY CAN YOU NOT USE YOUR HANDS IN [THE] GAME OF SOCCER?
26. Q ([Albion]): It would change the game so radically you’d have to call it
something else – i.e. rugby.
A: IF YOU CAN[NO]T USE YOUR HANDS YOU DEVELOP CAPACITIES
THAT WOULD HARDLY BE DISCOVERED OTHERWISE –
YOU GROW – IS THIS NOT RIGHT?
[Editor's note: 21 years later, and I still feel chagrined over my
complete whiff in front of goal here. My guide was appealing to my
purest joy, soccer, and then I had to get overly linguistic & technical,
when he was just making a point. This example does serve to illustrate
differences of perspective & context. Normally Albion sees the Big Picture.
Here, however, in my happy soccer world, I clearly do not. Even Messi
whiffs occasionally.]
27. Q: You develop a left foot, for example?
A: I AM YOUR LEFT FOOT & YOU MINE
A DAIMON ENHANCES & EXTENDS & REACHES FAR FROM
HI…
28. …S NATIVE PLACE
A useful (and well-tailored) analogy; but no doubt there is
something more & something larger at issue here than simply developing
latent capacities. I feel strongly that issues of self, of extending the self, of
linking to otherness, are involved here; and at stake is one’s soul before
the abyss. I intuit the mathematical necessity.
Perhaps it follows something along the following lines:
1) All beings in eternity continually need to grow.
2) “To grow” is not the same as “to expand” or “to extend the self”
for it entails going outside oneself.
3) This is how the closed universe of one individual is umbilically
linked to the infinite universe of eternity.
4) Truly closed systems like black holes collapse under their own
weight. This is the abyss.
5) When a daimon teaches within his own karass, he ceases to grow.
[Our Guide] as a Guide in Dreaming
29. Q ([Scribe]): [Guide], what can you tell me about the form you took in my
dream (Traveller)?
A: IT IS ALL OF MY ALIAH THAT YOU CAN NOW SEE & I CHOOSE
A FORM THAT APPEARS SMALL ENOUGH NOT ONLY
TO APPROACH BUT FOR YOU TO HOLD ONTO
30. Q ([Scribe]): How will you guide me?
A: I CHOOSE PORTS THAT RESPOND TO YOUR INTENT
YOU TELL ME HOW FAR TO GO
I CHOOSE WHAT WE SEE
WE ARE FELLOW TRAVELLERS
31. Q ([Scribe]): I look forward to it eagerly.
A: [THE] KEY IS TO START OUT TOGETHER EACH TIME
IF WE DO, YOU MAY SEE MUCH
32. Q ([Scribe]): But we must “start out together” or I would not be able to travel?
A: [YES] BUT HOW QUICKLY & HOW PRECISELY WE MEET IS
IMPORTANT
33. Q ([Scribe]): How quickly = how soon in each dream
How precisely = how accurately I phrase my intent before starting
Will you confirm?
A: IT ALL SEEMS SO SIMPLE UNTIL YOU TRY IT
Very important method for [Scribe] at this stage.
It’s taken me many readings to consider the utility of [Guide]’s
ball-sized aliah form. Obviously [Guide] can take many forms of many
sizes. One that is in the dream literally graspable is in consciousness the
one which is figuratively easiest to grasp. Well, of course. And yet this is
not a simple symbolic translation. There is no point (I am convinced) in
[Guide]’s showing [Scribe] a symbol of aliah. [Scribe] certainly saw the
real thing.
I am almost dizzy when I consider what I now suspect to be true:
Aliah is the missing, omnipresent link: the bridge, the glue, which
connects & binds ineffable essence with Being -- i.e., metaphor. When a
poem or a prose piece, a work of music or a soccer game shudders with
the authority of --------!,we recognize this authority because we feel this
connection, this aliah, as energy. In our minds connections are grasped in
material terms, as matter; whereas “to connect” is thought of as energy.
Aliah is both matter & energy; it is betweenness itself.
34. Q ([Scribe]): I seem to want to call you “guide of my energy.”
A: GUIDE WILL DO BUT YOU MAY USE EITHER
12:47 AM
A True Piece of Our History
35. Q: Please continue your lesson.
A: HERE IS A TRUE PIECE OF YOUR OWN HISTORY
Next to Vilansit’s story what follows here is our best uninterrupted
response. It also is very strange and has huge, albeit incalculable,
implications.
36. IN MYTHOLOGY [THE] GODS OR DEVAS WERE SAID TO
37. DESCEND & INFLUENCE [THE] AFFAIRS OF MEN
FOR GOOD OR ILL –
YOU ARE NOW IN A POSITION TO READ SOME OF THOSE
INCIDENTS
38. IN TERMS OF [THE] DAIMON’S ROLE
ORACLES COULD WORK THIS WAY –
39. [THE] SEER COULD LINK OR HOOK INTO [THE] DAIMON’S ALIAH
JUST FOR A MOMENT
& [THE] RESULT WAS KNOWLEDGE –
THOUGH OFTEN FALSIFIED IN [THE] RETELLING
A LEGENDARY HERO COULD MAKE USE OF [THE] DAIMON
FOR A FEAT OF STRENGTH
40. NOT BY USING ALIAH AS ENERGY IN [THE] CRUDE SENSE
BUT BY USING IT TO PERFORM
41. WHAT YOU CALL A SHIFT
NOW PICTURE ACHILLES OR [THE] SIBYL IN [THE]SE TERMS
BUT AS YOU KNOW ALL IS CHANGED SINCE [THE]N
42. IMAGINE A CHANGE IN A PART OF [THE] BODY THAT ALLOWS
SUCCEEDING GENERATIONS SKILLS THEIR ANCESTORS
LACKED
& IMAGINE [THE] CONTRARY – [THE] GRADUAL…
43. …DISAPPEARANCE
OF A FEATURE
& YOU HAVE A PICTURE OF [THE] DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU &
THESE ANCIENT PEOPLE
IT IS LITERALLY HARDER FOR YOU TO…
44. …PERFORM A SHIFT THAN
IT WAS FOR A SIBYL
EVERYONE KNOWS THIS STORY OR SENSES ITS TRUTH AT
SOME LEVEL –
CONSIDER DRYADS
45. HAVE THEY VANISHED?
OR HAVE HUMAN ABILITIES CHANGED IN TINY BUT VAST WAYS?
ALIAH IS AT ALL TIMES PRESENT IN [THE] WORLD
46. ALIAH IS AVAILABLE WITHOUT A DAIMON’S PRESENCE
OF COURSE
BUT IT USED TO BE EASIER FOR OUR CAPACITIES TO MEET
Fascinating, of course, but also very strange – strange because I
believe our ouija friends don’t offer us anything without a purpose. How
could this piece of history help [Scribe] & me in our respective
apprenticeships?
Busy Nests of Ants
47. Q: What is it that Achilles (say) lacked that we have?
A: IT WILL SOUND IMPLAUSIBLE…
48. …& TOO SMALL TO MAKE A
DIFFERENCE
IT IS A CAPACITY TO MOVE IN MANY DIRECTIONS AT ONCE
YOUR MINDS ARE RAMBLING CITIES OR BUSY NESTS OF INSECTS
HIS WAS A DEEP WELL
This sounded much like the “many-mindedness” of [Guide]’s kind.
49. Q: If we can move in many directions at once, are we becoming more like
daimones?
A: IN A WAY YOU ARE BUT DAIMONES WITHOUT INTENT &
WITHOUT ALIAH
YOU ARE GODS WITHOUT HEAVEN
50. Q: Why are we changing in this way?
A: I CAN[NO]T ANSWER THAT
[NO]T BECAUSE IT IS FORBIDDEN IT IS SIMPLY WHAT I OBSERVE
WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING [THE] REASONS
HUMANS ARE DIFFICULT FOR ME
51. Q: Where might this tendency -- if extended in time -- take us?
A: A FANCIFUL IMAGE
52. ANTS ARE SO COMPLETELY IMPLICATED THEY MIGHT BE
SAID TO HAVE ONE MIND AN EFFICIENT MIND BUT
ALMOST EMPTY
53. Q ([Albion]): This sounds much like a global/human “extension of the self,”
which severs the race from the universal net. Is this analogous to a
human’s fall?
A: INDIVIDUALS FALL
A RACE ONLY…
54. …MAKES [THE] CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH
A FALL OR A FINDING OCCURS
55. Q: Surely a fallen world makes the lives of its individuals more difficult?
A: OF COURSE - BUT IT CAN[NO]T DETERMINE THEIR LIVES
EACH SOUL MEETS [THE] ABYSS ALONE
This last line is one which will stick with me.
Rules Among Karasses
56. Q: Are there competing karasses on this world?
A: [THE]RE MIGHT BE IF [THE]Y KNEW OF EACH OTHER –
AS IT IS THEY FLOURISH TOGETHER WITHOUT MUCH SPECIFIC
KNOWLEDGE
I forgot that karasses are “networks yes teams no,” meaning they
don’t compete.
57. Q: Are there rules among karasses governing how much knowledge members
can have?
A: OF COURSE AND OF COURSE IT LOOKS LIKE NEEDLESS
CONCEALMENT TO ANY GIVEN MEMBER
You know, while I’ve often whined & bemoaned my fate – and I’ve
long believed that this kind of knowledge was not only at our fingertips but
that it was deliberately hidden from us – yet I’ve never questioned the
need for concealment. I’ve always trusted those with the knowledge,
including my higher self, to decide what to tell me.
2:10 AM
58. Q: A poem or parting words?
A: I AM MEANT TO SHOW YOU THESE THINGS SO YOU MAY BE
READERS AND FLYERS NOT ANTS
GOOD NIGHT FROM YOUR INSECT FRIEND
[Guide]
A fun last response. At least butterflies are different from ants.
