albionspeak 2: the gates of dis (10.4)

SESSION 60:  4TH NIGHT, 9/21/99

For our invocation I recited Shakespeare’s Sonnet 15, “When I consider

            everything that grows…” [my favorite]

10:44 PM
  1.       Q:        [Guide], are you there?
            A:
I   MEET YOU TWO

  2.       Q:        Instructions?
            A:
I  AM INSTRUCTED TO LET YOU CHOOSE YOUR LEADER
EACH IS PREPARED TO SPEAK AS YOU DECIDE

  3.       Q:        Because we wish to discuss memory tonight, we call on Don – but hope if

another expert is listening, he or she will join in.
            A:
DON WILL SPEAK AFTER [THE] EXERCISE

  4.       Q:        What is the exercise?
            A:
IT INVOLVES [NO] IMAGE   BUT HOLD [THE] IDEA OF MEMORY

                                    IN  YOUR MINDS
[THE]N LET MEMORY MOVE [THE] TRIPOD

   Don (b)

“Is memory a symmetrical object?”

  5.       Q:       We’ll attempt the exercise now.
            A:
DON -
                IS MEMORY A SYMMETRICAL OBJECT?

  6.       Q:        Jane told us that caring is memory projected onto the future.
            A:
CARING IS [THE] FUTURE OF MEMORY

  7.       Q:        It’s an error to think of memory as exclusively retrospective?
            A:
[YES]   I  ADMIT THAT GRAMMAR SEEMS TO DEMAND IT

  8.       Q:       We certainly fail to remember that which we don’t care about.
            A:
A CIRCLE HERE -
FOR WE CANNOT CARE FOR THAT WHICH WE FAIL TO

REMEMBER  THAT IS WHY FORGETTING IS…

  9.       Q ([Albion]):  The abyss?
                 ([Scribe]):  The enemy?
            A:
IT IS AN ABYSS ACROSS WHICH WE MADE [THE] BRIDGE

                                     OF ABSENCE

10.       Q:       We hypothesize:  the members of the Jewel Net are linked by a web of

                       caring & memory.
            A:
[YES] & [NO]
                       FIRST MEMORY

[censored: Don’s story, Y.]

11.       Q:       Tell us more.
            A:
[Y.]  IS A FABLE OF [THE] POSSIBILITY OF LINKAGE

12.       Q:       Please go on.
            A:
    [THE] JEWEL MAKES IT LITERAL
IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE ACCESS TO A REMOTE MEMORY BY

                                   MEANS OF A FIBER
                       & WHAT IS MUCH ODDER…
13.                                                                  [Y.] HAS ACCE[ss]

14.        Q:      To our memories?
             A:
EXACTLY - THANKS TO A MEANINGFUL SYMMETRY

15.        Q:      In your story, the access to the past becomes a nightmare.
             A:
I  EXPRESS MY BEST INSIGHTS IN [THE] LANGUAGE OR MODE

                                   OF NIGHTMARES

16.        Q:      If access were not symmetrical, might this amount to a kind of abuse of

                       power between members?
             A:
I  THINK IT WOULD DEFEAT [THE] NOTION OF A KARASS

After a break:

Caring

17.        Q:     And there have to be links of caring that join us to the outside. [lest even

karasses amount to no more than flotsam]
             A:
HENCE OUR BUTTERFLY -
TO GO NO FURTHER OFF THAN [THE] GROTTO

18.        Q:     Tell us more of caring.
             A:
IT IS A DIFFICULT SUBJECT   BECAUSE [THE] VIEW FROM TIME

                                  IS SO DIFFERENT

19.        Q:     Please go on.
             A:
  I  CARE FOR YOU – SAY –
THIS IMPLIES PERHAPS THAT  I  CANNOT ONLY TEACH YOU…
20.                             BUT STOP YOU ALSO FROM STRAYING OR FALLING OR

                                  BEING LOST

21.        Q:     To a point.
[that is, without violating anyone’s free will…]
             A:
BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT MEMBERS AND MEMORIES…
22.
ARE LOST ALL [THE]…
23.
                           TIME
THIS IS WHY WE DARE NOT MISLEAD YOU INTO THINKING

YOURSELVES SAFE – YOU ARE [NO]T

24.        Q:     Is it correct to say:  “the jewel is our deepest care & deepest memory”?
             A:
IT IS A MEMORY THAT IS STILL TO BE DISCOVERED
AND TO LEARN TO CARE FOR IT IS LIKEWISE A TASK

25.        Q:     In fact, the same task.
             A:
[THE] ONE WING CLOSES ON [THE] OTHER   LIKE A

                                   BUTTERFLY’S –
THIS IS [THE] BEGINNING OF FLIGHT

“False” Memories

26.        Q:     As in ([Albion’s] story) “Elevator Music” can new—even false memories

of the past—change the present ob (objective) reality?
             A:
A NIGHTMARE?
I  THINK WHAT CHANGES IS [THE] SUB STORY

27.        Q:     Can false memories spread among people—like a virus?
             A:
  THEY CERTAINLY DO SEEM TO

28.        Q:     A speculation:  as more people “remember” similar false experiences, a

gravity” attracts others to the same false reality and multiplies the

                      phenomenon.
             A:
I  WOULD NOT CALL THAT AN INSTANCE OF MEMORY OR

                                  REMEMBERING
                      RATHER…
29.                                  A SPECIES OF SHARED IMAGINING

30.        Q:     In [
Y.], we learn that it is possible to be overwhelmed by another’s memory.

Is this a danger in the karass?
             A:
IT IS – [YES] –
HENCE THE USE OF FIBERS WHICH GIVE ACCESS NOT…
31.                             TO THE TOTAL

32.        Q:     Thank you, Don.  We also want to thank anyone who may have been

                      listening in.
             A:
I  LISTENED INTENTLY & DO SO TOMORROW AS WELL

                      GOOD NIGHT & LOVE

                                  JANE
